Environmental Impact Assessment of our Cement Replacements

Our ultra-low carbon cement replacement production technology employs the most environmentally friendly techniques to reduce carbon emissions.

Globally Portland Cement production is a major contributor to global warming and is a major source of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. For every tonne of portland cement produced almost one tonne of carbon dioxide is produced.

Our cement replacements reduce this emmission overhead to virtually zero by a combination of the innovative use of renewable energy and converting existing industrial by-products (waste) into a flexible, multi purpose cement replacement.

comparing portland cement to cenin products

The chart above shows the amount of CO2 produced for each of our cement products compared to Portland Cement.

The assessment methodology follows the reporting principles and guidelines provided by the WBCSD Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

The scope of the independent assessment produced by 'Energy for Sustainable Development' includes: incoming delivery of raw materials; energy consumed during material processing and product manufacture; embodied emissions of materials and; product distribution.

The emissions associated with conventional Portland cement are 853 kilograms of CO2 per tonne of cement (British Cement Association).

"This study demonstrates that Cenin have achieved substantial emissions reductions on this figure with their cement replacement products (an average across all products of 60% when compared to Portland cement) through a variety of measures."

Cenin uses renewable energy in the production of its cement replacement products – specifically biogas and wind power. The chart above demonstrates what the total emissions for each product would be if Cenin used imported electricity, drawn from the UK grid, and natural gas. The chart also compares those emissions to the total emissions using only renewable energy. The UK electricity and natural gas emissions factors used in this analysis are provided by DEFRA.

By increasing the use of waste products as opposed to co-products (economically valuable by-products resulting from manufacturing processes) in the manufacture of cement replacement products, Canin can further reduce the emissions associated with their cement replacement products.

Our Technological Partners:

Building from our research arm Celtic Cement Technology who provide the advanced patented technology behind our industrial process, we are developing a fifth scale cement replacement manufacturing plant to produce a superior quality cement from industrial by-products using 100% renewable energy. This energy will be generated principally from Biogas and supplemented by wind power.
