We aim to be the first manufacturing unit to produce a cement replacement from industrial by-products using 100% renewable energy.
It is projected that the world currently uses 2.75 billion tonnes of Cement and will need up to 5 billon tonnes by 2025 adding a further 2 billion tons of carbon emissions to the atmosphere. We at Celtic Cement are pioneering vital sustainable low carbon alternatives.

Renewable Energy Partnerships Ltd, an independent windfarm developer, are developing a wind farm on land adjoining our site: http://www.newtondownwindfarm.co.uk Wind Power offers a solution to meet the energy needs of our low carbon manufacturing process.
Should this independent project be given the go ahead both companies are keen to pursue a supply arrangement from the windfarm to supplement the Bio gas plant on site.
We are also working in conjunction with leading European universities who are helping with proof of concept for clean power generation from renewable energy sources.

We are developing a 1 Mega Watt (mw) high efficiency electrical output generation plant using Bio gas which will provide the majority of the energy needs for our cement replacement production plant.
Below is an artists impression of the new Anaerobic Digestion (AD) Plant that will be completed and operational by late 2009.
The gas is produced from the biological decomposition of agricultural energy crops and food waste. We have secured a reliable supply of local agricultural crops such as maize and silage which will be transported to the power plant using energy efficient transport.
We will also be offering local authorities, food manufacturers and other producers of bulk food waste the opportunity to significantly reduce their waste disposal costs by recycling the waste in our AD digester rather than sending it to an expensive landfill site.
A by-product of the decomposition process is a high quality organic fertilizer which will be returned to the land.
Combined Heat and Power systems (CHP) provide the single most efficient way to reduce carbon emissions and cut energy costs.
The Cenin CHP unit proposed at our Stormy Down site will be fuelled from Bio gas to produce both electricity and heat at the same time (cogeneration). Rather than wasting the heat normally rejected by other electricity generating processes, CHP recovers most of it, in the form of hot water, which increases the efficiency of fuel utilisation. The unit will have a heat output of around 1.5 times the electrical power output – energy that would normally just escape to the atmosphere. This heat is then used in the process.
Trigeneration
Trigeneration is a combination of cogeneration and absorption chilling. During the summer months the heat generated by the CHP may not be fully utilised on site. We plan use the excess heat to operate an absorption chiller- a compact unit with only a few mechanical parts.
In comparison to conventional air conditioning methods an absorption chiller uses a waste product and therefore leads to considerable savings in primary energy consumption.
